Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno
Project Description
The Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno is one of the most important cemeteries in Europe and, due to the vastness of its important funeral monuments, a veritable open-air museum. The functional program of the project plans to intervene in the access area most frequented by visitors and tourists by restoring both the existing buildings intended for reception, the bookshop, information and control, and the elegant cenotaph-votive temple. Furthermore, the construction of a new building used as offices, warehouse and spaces for the resting of the coffins is planned. Once you have crossed the entrance and passed the pronaos of the votive temple, you reach the newly built area surrounded by a crown of cypresses: behind the vast and monumental historic portico, with its mighty tympanum and deep chiaroscuro, one has imagined a additional covered space where you can stop or pass to access the various functions housed in the new building. The portico evokes the combination of house/temple, an essential architectural reference for the project on a par with simple geometries and control of proportions. The new intervention intends to discreetly assume these elements, presenting itself with the clear appearance of a trapezoid that follows the ordering axes of the cemetery layout.
